Turning 65 in Idaho: Your Medicare Checklist
A month-by-month Medicare checklist for Idahoans turning 65, when to enroll, how to avoid late penalties, and how Idaho Medicaid changes the math.
Turning 65 in Idaho triggers one of the most important deadlines of your retirement: your Initial Enrollment Period for Medicare. Miss it and you can face lifetime penalties on Part B and Part D. Here's the timeline we walk every Idahoan through.
Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
Your IEP is 7 months long: the 3 months before your 65th birthday month, your birthday month, and the 3 months after. Enroll in the first 3 months for coverage that starts the first day of your birthday month.
Month-by-month checklist
- 6 months out: Confirm your work or retiree coverage status. If you're still on employer coverage with 20+ employees, you may delay Part B without penalty.
- 3 months out: Enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B at ssa.gov or your local Idaho Social Security office.
- 2 months out: Compare Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D options available in your Idaho county.
- 1 month out: Submit your plan enrollment so coverage starts the first day of your birthday month.
- After your birthday month: If you also qualify for Idaho Medicaid, apply for MSP and Extra Help, these can wipe out your Part B premium.
Penalties to avoid
- Part B late penalty: 10% added to your premium for every 12 months you delayed, for life.
- Part D late penalty: 1% per month uncovered, for life.
- Medigap underwriting: miss your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment and carriers can deny you or charge more based on health.
If you're dual-eligible (Medicare + Idaho Medicaid), most of these penalties are waived through Extra Help. That's one more reason to apply for MSP the moment you turn 65.
