How to Enroll in a Dual-Eligible Plan in Idaho (Step by Step)

A clear walkthrough of enrolling in a D-SNP or MMCP in Idaho, what documents you need, the enrollment windows, and what happens after you sign up.

If you (or someone you care for) has both Medicare and Idaho Medicaid, you can change Medicare plans almost any month of the year. That's a major advantage dual-eligibles have over everyone else, but very few people know it.

The Special Enrollment Period for dual-eligibles

Dual-eligibles get an Integrated SEP that lets you enroll in or switch a D-SNP or MMCP plan once per quarter in Q1, Q2, and Q3, plus the regular Annual Enrollment Period in Q4. You don't have to wait for fall.

What to gather before you call

  • Your red, white, and blue Medicare card.
  • Your Idaho Medicaid card (or your Medicaid ID number).
  • A list of your current doctors and specialists.
  • A list of your prescriptions, with doses.
  • Your preferred pharmacy.

Step-by-step

  1. Confirm your eligibility category (full Medicaid vs. QMB-only), this determines which plans you can join.
  2. Compare the carriers available in your county. Networks, formularies, and extra benefits vary.
  3. Verify your doctors and prescriptions are in-network and on-formulary BEFORE enrolling.
  4. Submit the enrollment, by phone, online, or paper. Your start date is usually the first of the following month.
  5. Wait for your welcome packet and new card, then schedule a check-in with your new care coordinator.

What happens to your old coverage

When you enroll in a new Medicare Advantage or MMCP plan, your old Medicare Advantage plan is automatically cancelled. Your Idaho Medicaid stays exactly the same, Medicaid doesn't go away because you changed Medicare plans.
