Choosing a D-SNP in Idaho Falls: What to Actually Compare

Six things to compare when picking a Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan in Idaho Falls and eastern Idaho, beyond the glossy brochure.

Most D-SNP marketing focuses on the extras, the dental allowance, the OTC card, the gym membership. Those matter, but they're not what makes or breaks a plan for a dual-eligible client. Here's what to look at first.

  1. Is your primary care doctor in-network? If not, the rest of the comparison doesn't matter.
  2. Are your specialists in-network, especially cardiology, nephrology, and behavioral health, the three that change plans most often in eastern Idaho?
  3. Is EIRMC (and your preferred hospital) in-network for both inpatient and outpatient?
  4. Are your prescriptions on the formulary at a tier you can afford with Extra Help?
  5. What does the care coordinator actually do? Some carriers call once a year; others coordinate every appointment.
  6. How fast does the carrier turn around prior authorizations? This is the single biggest source of frustration for dual-eligible members.

The OTC allowance, the dental, the transportation, those are tiebreakers, not deciders.
